The Laughing Policeman (1973) is an American neo-noir thriller film, directed by Stuart Rosenberg. It is based on the novel of the same name by Maj Sjöwall and Per Wahlöö, with the story's location shifted from Stockholm to San Francisco. Walter Matthau stars as Detective Jake Martin.

A group of passengers, including off-duty police detective Dave Evans, were tragically killed in a shooting. Evans had been investigating businessman Henry Camarero for his possible involvement in the murder of his wife Teresa two years ago. Detective Sergeant Jake Martin, who previously handled the Teresa Camarero case, is now investigating the bus massacre with bitterness towards his inability to bring Camarero to justice. With the help of Inspector Leo Larsen, who is eager but reckless, they pursue suspects despite their superior's orders. Eventually, Camarero is cornered and pursued through the streets of San Francisco before a showdown on another bus.
