Los Angeles — a city of sunshine, success, ambition and loneliness, where relationships can disappear almost as quickly as they begin.
Songwriter Carroll Barber returns to Los Angeles from England when musician Eric Wood prepares to record an album of his songs. Unknown to Carroll, the project is being secretly financed by his wealthy and estranged father, Carl, who hopes his son's return might finally bring them closer together.
Instead, Carroll drifts through the city and into the complicated lives of the people around him. His encounters with lonely real-estate agent Ann Goode, photographer Nona Bruce and troubled housewife Karen Hood draw him into an increasingly tangled circle of attraction, infidelity and emotional frustration. Meanwhile, the marriages and affairs surrounding Carroll begin to collide, exposing a world in which almost everyone is searching for intimacy but few seem capable of finding it.
Set against the seductive backdrop of 1970s Los Angeles, Welcome to L.A. is an unconventional ensemble drama combining romance, music and darkly comic observation. Writer-director Alan Rudolph, working with producer Robert Altman, creates a melancholy portrait of alienation and desire in the City of Angels.
