In the 1956 film, The Man Who Never Was, Royal Navy lieutenant commander Ewen Montagu (Clifton Webb) concocts a daring plan to deceive the Nazis about the impending Allied invasion of Southern Europe. This scheme, called Operation Mincemeat, involves releasing a body with a fake identity off the coast of Spain to fool the Germans into believing the invasion will occur in Greece instead of Sicily. With government approval, Montagu procures a suitable corpse and carefully orchestrates the release of the body to land ashore as planned. The Germans fall for the ruse and move their troops to Greece, allowing the Allies to successfully invade Sicily. Montagu receives recognition for his service and later visits the grave of "the man who never was," leaving his Order of the British Empire medal as a tribute.
