Suspiria (1977) is an Italian supernatural horror film directed by Dario Argento, co-written by Daria Nicolodi, and partially based on Thomas De Quincey's 1845 essay Suspiria de Profundis. Starring Jessica Harper as an American ballet student, the film follows her journey to a prestigious dance academy, where she discovers a coven of witches hiding behind its facade. Alongside Harper, Suspiria features Stefania Casini, Flavio Bucci, Miguel Bosé, Alida Valli, Udo Kier, and Joan Bennett in her final role. This film is the first of Argento's The Three Mothers trilogy, followed by Inferno (1980) and The Mother of Tears (2007). Praised for its visual style, use of vibrant colors, and score by Argento and progressive rock band Goblin, Suspiria has been praised by critics as one of the most influential works in the horror genre.
