In 1959 South Dakota, 15-year-old Holly Sargis meets charismatic 25-year-old drifter Kit Carruthers. Their unlikely romance quickly becomes dangerous when Holly’s disapproving father attempts to bring their relationship to an end.

After Kit commits murder, the young couple flee across the American Midwest. What begins as an escape develops into a chilling journey through the vast, isolated landscape as Kit leaves an increasingly violent trail behind them and the authorities close in.

Written and directed by Terrence Malick in his remarkable feature-film debut, Badlands combines crime drama, romance and striking cinematography to create one of the most distinctive American films of the 1970s.
