Soylent Green is a 1973 American dystopian thriller film directed by Richard Fleischer, starring Charlton Heston, Leigh Taylor-Young, and Edward G. Robinson in his final role. It is loosely based on the 1966 science-fiction novel Make Room! Make Room! and combines elements of science fiction and a police procedural. The plot follows a murder investigation in a future of dying oceans and environmental crises, caused by overpopulation, pollution, and climate change. New York City is home to 40 million people, with only the wealthy living in luxury while the majority suffer from poverty and scarcity. The Soylent Corporation supplies the main staple food, Soylent Red and Soylent Yellow, while introducing a new, supposedly more nutritious wafer called Soylent Green made from plankton. NYPD Detective Robert Thorn and his colleague Sol Roth, a former professor, work together to solve a murder case involving a member of the Soylent Corporation's board
