Jonas Cord Jr. rises to become one of the wealthiest men in America during the early 20th century, inheriting his late father's explosives company. He acquires all of the company's stock and pays off his father's widow, Rina Marlowe. As a pioneering aviator, Cord's fortune continues to grow. He eliminates his business rival, Winthrop, and then marries Winthrop's daughter Monica, only to abandon her when she desires a more traditional life with children. Despite Monica's hopes that Cord will return to her, he instead begins an affair with his stepmother, Rina, in order to force the divorce. Devastated, Monica gives Cord his freedom and later discovers she is pregnant with his child. After giving birth, Cord visits Monica, demanding to know if he is the father. She commands him to leave her and their daughter alone. In the meantime, former Cord company stockholder Nevada Smith finds success in western films as a popular cowboy
