Young farm girl Esther Blodgett dreams of becoming a Hollywood actress. Leaving her small-town life behind, she arrives in California determined to make her mark despite overwhelming odds. Her fortunes change when she meets fading screen idol Norman Maine, a charismatic but deeply troubled movie star whose career is being destroyed by alcoholism.

Recognising Esther's remarkable talent, Norman helps launch her career under the new name Vicki Lester, and she quickly becomes one of Hollywood's brightest new stars. As Esther's success grows, Norman's life spirals downward, placing their marriage under unbearable strain. Faced with heartbreaking choices between love, loyalty and ambition, both must confront the sacrifices demanded by stardom.
