Set in a small Irish town during the early 1960s, The Butcher Boy is a disturbing, darkly humorous and unforgettable tale of childhood innocence destroyed by family tragedy, cruelty and madness.
Twelve-year-old Francie Brady (Eamonn Owens) escapes the misery of his troubled home life by retreating into a colourful fantasy world filled with comic-book heroes, cowboys, gangsters and imaginary adventures. With an alcoholic father (Stephen Rea) and a mentally fragile mother (Aisling O'Sullivan), Francie's only real happiness comes from his friendship with Joe Purcell.
However, when his mother tragically takes her own life and his relationship with Joe begins to deteriorate, Francie's already fragile world starts to collapse. His bitter feud with the respectable Mrs Nugent (Fiona Shaw) and her son Phillip grows increasingly dangerous, while his experiences in a reform school push him further towards emotional instability.
Unable to distinguish fantasy from reality, Francie gradually descends into a terrifying world of obsession, resentment and violence, culminating in a shocking tragedy that devastates his hometown.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker Neil Jordan and adapted from Patrick McCabe's celebrated novel, The Butcher Boy is a powerful and provocative blend of psychological drama, surreal fantasy and savage black comedy. Featuring an extraordinary performance by Eamonn Owens, the film earned international recognition, including the Silver Bear for Best Director at the 1998 Berlin International Film Festival.
