When a violent earthquake tears open the ground, it releases a previously unknown species of insect from deep beneath the Earth's surface. These extraordinary creatures possess a terrifying ability—they can ignite fires simply by rubbing their legs together.

Most of the insects quickly begin to die because they cannot survive the lower atmospheric pressure above ground. But after one of the creatures causes the horrifying death of his wife, scientist Professor James Parmiter becomes dangerously fascinated by them.

Keeping a surviving specimen alive inside a pressure chamber, Parmiter's scientific curiosity develops into an obsession. He begins experimenting with the creature and eventually crossbreeds it with a modern cockroach.

The result is far more terrifying than anything he could have imagined: a new generation of intelligent, flying, fire-starting super-cockroaches capable of learning, communicating—and perhaps even controlling the man who created them.
