THE AWAKENING (1980) is a British horror film, directed by Mike Newell, based on Bram Stoker's 1903 novel The Jewel of Seven Stars. Starring Charlton Heston, Susannah York, and Stephanie Zimbalist, it is the third adaptation of the novel. Released by Warner Bros., the film follows the story of an Egyptian archaeological dig in 1961, where three main characters - Matthew Corbeck, his wife Anne, and Jane Turner - uncover a tomb containing the mummy of an ancient queen. As the plot unfolds, it becomes clear that the mummy has the power to possess and control the living, leading to deadly consequences for those who oppose it. With a professional and objective tone, the film delves into themes of obsession, reincarnation, and violence. Soaked in history and scientific facts, it offers a unique take on the classic horror genre.
