THE BURNING (1981) is a slasher film directed by Tony Maylam, starring Brian Matthews, Leah Ayres, Brian Backer, Larry Joshua, and Lou David. The plot follows a summer camp caretaker who seeks revenge after being horribly burnt in a prank gone wrong. Featuring the debuts of Jason Alexander, Fisher Stevens, and Holly Hunter, it is an international co-production between the United States and Canada and based on the urban legend of the Cropsey maniac. With a score by Rick Wakeman of Yes, the film was theatrically released on May 8, 1981, and while initially receiving negative reviews, has since become a cult classic and received positive reappraisal from critics. The story centers on the surviving campers of Camp Blackfoot who relive the legend of Cropsy while being terrorized by the disfigured caretaker at a nearby camp.
