The 1961 gothic psychological horror film The Innocents, directed and produced by Jack Clayton, features Deborah Kerr, Michael Redgrave, and Megs Jenkins. The movie is based on Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw, adapted by William Archibald and Truman Capote, who used Archibald's 1950 stage play as their main source. The story follows a governess who begins to believe her charges and their estate are haunted. Originally, Archibald's script portrayed the paranormal occurrences as real, but Clayton was dissatisfied and asked Capote to revise it, resulting in a narrative that explores psychological themes. The film was shot on location at Sheffield Park in Sussex and at Shepperton Studios, using unique lighting and sound techniques. The original score by Georges Auric was modified by W. Lambert Williamson due to Auric's unavailability. The film was distributed globally by 20th Century Fox and premiered in London on November 24, 1961
