In a cramped London flat, Amy Preston (Yvonne Mitchell) believes she has a happy marriage with her husband Jim (Anthony Quayle) and their teenage son Brian. Warm-hearted but hopelessly disorganised, Amy struggles to keep their chaotic home under control.
Unknown to her, Jim has fallen in love with his younger colleague Georgie (Sylvia Syms), who wants him to leave his family and begin a new life with her. When Jim finally asks Amy for a divorce, her comfortable world is shattered.
Desperate to save her marriage, Amy attempts to transform herself, leading to an intensely emotional confrontation when Jim brings Georgie home. All three are forced to face the painful reality of love, marriage and the choices they have made.
Directed by J. Lee Thompson, Woman in a Dressing Gown is a powerful early example of British social realism, distinguished by Yvonne Mitchell's acclaimed central performance.
