DEATH WISH (1974)
Directed by Michael Winner
Charles Bronson stars as Paul Kersey, a mild-mannered New York City architect whose peaceful existence is shattered when a vicious gang of street criminals attacks his family, murdering his wife and leaving his daughter severely traumatised. Devastated by grief and increasingly frustrated with a justice system seemingly powerless to control the city's escalating violence, Kersey undergoes a dramatic transformation. After receiving a revolver, he begins walking the dangerous streets of New York after dark, deliberately exposing himself to potential attackers. When confronted by armed muggers, he responds with deadly force, becoming a mysterious vigilante whose actions capture the attention of the police, the press and an increasingly divided public. As the body count rises, Kersey becomes both a feared executioner and a controversial symbol of resistance against violent crime.
DEATH WISH II (1982)
Directed by Michael Winner
Paul Kersey has relocated to Los Angeles, hoping to escape the terrible memories of his past and rebuild his life with his daughter Carol. However, tragedy strikes once again when a ruthless gang of five criminals invades his home, brutally assaults his housekeeper and kidnaps his daughter, setting in motion another devastating sequence of events. When both women die, Kersey finds himself consumed by a renewed desire for vengeance. Rejecting the possibility of justice through conventional police investigations, he takes matters into his own hands and begins systematically hunting down those responsible. Moving through the dangerous backstreets and criminal underworld of Los Angeles, Kersey adopts his former vigilante identity, determined to make each offender pay for the suffering inflicted upon his family. Meanwhile, a New York detective familiar with Kersey's history arrives in California as the authorities begin to suspect the notorious vigilante has returned.
DEATH WISH 3 (1985)
Directed by Michael Winner
Returning to New York City to visit an old friend, Paul Kersey discovers that the neighbourhood he once knew has become a lawless battleground controlled by a violent street gang. When his friend is murdered and Kersey himself is arrested, he encounters Police Inspector Richard Shriker, a tough and increasingly desperate officer who knows about Kersey's vigilante past. Rather than sending him back to prison, Shriker makes an extraordinary arrangement, allowing Kersey to confront the criminals terrorising the community. As the gang's intimidation, robberies and murders intensify, Kersey joins forces with frightened local residents who have endured years of abuse. Armed with an increasingly formidable collection of weapons, he transforms their neighbourhood into a battleground and prepares for an explosive confrontation with the gang's ruthless leader. What follows is an all-out urban war as Kersey delivers his own uncompromising brand of street justice.
DEATH WISH 4: THE CRACKDOWN (1987)
Directed by J. Lee Thompson
Paul Kersey is living in Los Angeles and enjoying a new relationship with journalist Karen Sheldon when tragedy once again turns his world upside down. Karen's teenage daughter dies after taking cocaine, leaving Kersey determined to strike back against the ruthless drug dealers responsible for destroying young lives. His quest for revenge attracts the attention of wealthy businessman Nathan White, who offers to finance a private war against the city's powerful drug organisations. Equipped with sophisticated weapons and detailed information about the criminal underworld, Kersey begins infiltrating rival drug syndicates, eliminating dealers, destroying their operations and turning competing gangs against one another. However, as he moves deeper into the dangerous world of organised crime, he discovers that deception and betrayal are everywhere. Facing heavily armed criminals and increasingly deadly opposition, Kersey must uncover the truth behind his mysterious benefactor before becoming the next victim.
DEATH WISH V: THE FACE OF DEATH (1994)
Directed by Allan A. Goldstein
In the fifth and final instalment of the original Death Wish series, Paul Kersey attempts to leave his violent past behind and begin a peaceful new life in New York with his fiancée, successful fashion designer Olivia Regent. Their happiness is threatened when Olivia's former husband, ruthless mobster Tommy O'Shea, attempts to seize control of her fashion business through intimidation, violence and organised crime. When Olivia refuses to surrender to his demands, O'Shea's brutal campaign of terror escalates with devastating consequences. Once again forced to confront the murder of someone he loves, Kersey abandons his hopes of a quiet retirement and sets out to dismantle the criminal organisation responsible. Using his experience, intelligence and deadly ingenuity, he systematically targets O'Shea's associates, drawing the mob boss into a final confrontation. With the authorities struggling to contain the violence, Paul Kersey prepares to deliver one last act of vigilante justice.
