As the American Civil War tears the country apart, Jesse James and his companions Frank James, Cole Younger, Jim Younger and Kit Dalton find themselves drawn into the violent world of Confederate guerrilla leader William Quantrill.
Initially impressed by Quantrill and the protection his raiders provide, Jesse begins to question his loyalty after witnessing the brutality committed in the name of war. His growing relationship with Kate Clarke further complicates matters, while the infamous raid on Lawrence, Kansas pushes Jesse and his friends towards the outlaw lives that will make them legends.
