After nuclear war has reduced America to a lawless wasteland, eighteen-year-old Vic and his highly intelligent telepathic dog Blood survive by relying on each other's unique talents. While Blood uses his extraordinary senses to locate food and danger, Vic searches for whatever pleasures remain in a brutal world where survival is the only law.

Their uneasy partnership is tested when Vic becomes involved with the mysterious Quilla June, who lures him into Downunder—a hidden underground society that appears peaceful on the surface but conceals a sinister secret. Trapped in a bizarre community with its own disturbing agenda, Vic must decide where his true loyalties lie before both he and Blood lose everything.
