Three men who live for danger arrive in a quiet Midwestern town — and leave its people forever changed.
The Gypsy Moths are a travelling team of daredevil skydivers who arrive in a small Kansas town to perform a spectacular Fourth of July exhibition. Led by the intense and reckless Mike Rettig (Burt Lancaster), the trio also includes veteran jumper Joe Browdy (Gene Hackman) and the younger Malcolm Webson (Scott Wilson).
Staying with Malcolm's relatives, Mike is drawn to Elizabeth Brandon (Deborah Kerr), a lonely married woman whose encounter with the charismatic skydiver develops into a passionate affair. Meanwhile, Malcolm begins a tentative romance with local girl Annie Burke (Bonnie Bedelia).
As the day of their exhibition approaches, personal tensions collide with the extraordinary risks of their profession. For Mike, one final and breathtaking jump will have consequences that none of them can escape.
Directed with characteristic intensity by John Frankenheimer, The Gypsy Moths is a powerful and beautifully photographed drama about freedom, loneliness, love and men driven to live on the edge.
