The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is a 1969 British drama film directed by Ronald Neame, adapted from the stage play by Jay Presson Allen and the novel by Muriel Spark. Starring Maggie Smith as a free-spirited teacher at an all-girls school in 1930s Edinburgh, the film premiered at the 1969 Cannes Film Festival and was later released in the UK and US. Despite Smith’s acclaimed performance, the film underperformed at the box office. Smith won an Academy Award for her role, and the film received a nomination for Best Original Song. The plot centers on Miss Brodie’s unconventional teaching methods and her relationships with her students and fellow teachers, particularly her former lover, Teddy Lloyd. As the girls grow older, their loyalty to Miss Brodie is tested and secrets are revealed, ultimately leading to her dismissal from the school.
