A MAN OF CONSCIENCE. A KING OF ABSOLUTE POWER.
England, 1529. King Henry VIII is determined to end his marriage to Catherine of Aragon and secure the freedom to marry Anne Boleyn. But standing between the King and his wishes is one man whose conscience cannot be bought, threatened or silenced: Sir Thomas More.
When More succeeds Cardinal Wolsey as Lord Chancellor, he finds himself increasingly at odds with the Crown. Henry demands that Parliament recognise him as Supreme Head of the Church of England, but More refuses to compromise his religious beliefs and principles. Resigning his position and choosing silence rather than betrayal of his conscience, he hopes the law will protect him.
But as political pressure mounts and former friends turn against him, More is drawn into a dangerous struggle with Thomas Cromwell and the ambitious Richard Rich. His refusal to take the Oath of Supremacy ultimately places his freedom—and his life—in jeopardy.
Directed by Fred Zinnemann and adapted by Robert Bolt from his celebrated play, A Man for All Seasons is a magnificent historical drama about courage, integrity and one man's determination to remain true to his beliefs, whatever the cost.
