Ella Peterson is a warm-hearted switchboard operator at the Susanswerphone answering service who simply cannot resist becoming involved in the lives of her customers. Whether encouraging a struggling actor, helping an aspiring songwriter or cheering up a lonely child, Ella always seems to know exactly what people need.
But one particular customer has captured her heart: Jeffrey Moss, a talented but insecure playwright struggling to finish his latest work. Ella knows him only by his voice, but when Jeffrey reaches a crisis point, she breaks the rules and enters his life in person, pretending to be the mysterious “Melisande Scott.”
As Ella sets about restoring Jeffrey’s confidence, romance begins to blossom—but complications are never far away. A suspicious police investigation and an unusual “record business” being run through the answering service soon create a hilarious series of misunderstandings.
