Kirk Douglas gives a powerful performance as Vincent van Gogh in this acclaimed portrait of one of history’s most extraordinary and troubled artists.
Driven by an overwhelming desire to find meaning and purpose, Vincent abandons his early religious ambitions and devotes himself to art. Supported by his loyal brother Theo, he struggles through poverty, rejection and turbulent relationships while pursuing his vision with an intensity that few around him can understand.
His journey takes him from the bleak mining communities of Belgium to the artistic circles of Paris and the brilliant sunlight of Arles, where his friendship with fellow painter Paul Gauguin becomes increasingly volatile. As Vincent’s paintings grow more vivid and remarkable, his emotional state becomes increasingly fragile, leading him toward the tragic final chapter of his life.
Directed by Vincente Minnelli and beautifully photographed in Metrocolor and CinemaScope, Lust for Life brings the world of Van Gogh vividly to the screen.
