The 1966 adventure film THE FIGHTING PRINCE OF DONEGAL stars Peter McEnery and Susan Hampshire and is based on the novel Red Hugh: Prince of Donegal by Robert T. Reilly. It was distributed by Buena Vista and filmed entirely at Pinewood Studios in Buckinghamshire. The story, set in the late 1580s, loosely follows the real-life exploits of Irish prince Hugh Roe "Red Hugh" O'Donnell. When his father, Chief of the Name, passes away, Hugh becomes Chief of Clan O'Donnell and an Irish prophecy is seemingly fulfilled, promising independence from Elizabethan and English rule. However, the Queen's Lord Lieutenant kidnaps him and holds him hostage in Dublin Castle. After a daring escape, Hugh joins forces with the sons of Hugh Roe O'Neill and the O'Donnell lords to fight against the foreigners. However, Hugh realizes that the best plan is to unite with the other clans of the island and negotiate.
