This film is the final installment of the Karnstein Trilogy, based on the 1872 novella Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu. Though it adds a witchfinding theme to the story, it deviates significantly from the original novella. At the center of the plot are twin sisters, Frieda and Maria, whose opposing natures and beauty drive the film's intrigue. Unlike the previous films in the series, there is only a brief mention of lesbianism. Twins of Evil was released in the U.S. as a double feature with Hands of the Ripper and follows the story of the twin sisters after they are orphaned and sent to live with their strict, Puritan uncle Gustav Weil in a Central European town called Karnstein. While one sister, Frieda, becomes fascinated with the local Count Karnstein and his reputation for wickedness, the other, Maria, falls for their handsome teacher Anton. As the story unfolds, Frieda is turned into a vampire by the Count
