In a quiet Southern town, gentle Bubba Ritter shares an innocent friendship with young Marylee Williams. But when Marylee is attacked by a vicious dog, the cruel and suspicious Otis Hazelrigg immediately blames Bubba.

Terrified for her son, Bubba's mother disguises him as a scarecrow and hides him in a field. But Hazelrigg and his vigilante companions track him down and kill him—only to discover moments later that Bubba had actually saved Marylee's life.

The men escape justice, but their nightmare is only beginning.

When a mysterious scarecrow starts appearing in their fields, members of the group begin dying in a succession of strange and terrifying accidents. As fear spreads through the community, Hazelrigg becomes convinced that someone—or something—has returned to settle an old score.
