When retired New York teacher Harry Coombes is forced from his longtime apartment, he decides that rather than surrender his independence, he will take to the road with his beloved ginger cat, Tonto.
What begins as a simple journey becomes an extraordinary cross-country adventure. Along the way, Harry encounters old friends, estranged family members, runaways and an assortment of memorable strangers. Each meeting gives him a fresh perspective on his past and reminds him that growing older doesn't mean that life's adventures are over.
Funny, bittersweet and beautifully observed, Harry and Tonto is an affectionate portrait of a man rediscovering freedom, friendship and his appetite for life. Art Carney gives the performance of his career as Harry, winning the Academy Award for Best Actor.
