The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1939) was a ground-breaking romantic drama film featuring Charles Laughton and Maureen O'Hara. This film, directed by William Dieterle and produced by Pandro S. Berman, was based on Victor Hugo's 1831 novel. It was also the first film to be shown at the Cannes Film Festival, although the rest of the festival was cancelled due to the start of World War II. In the film, set in medieval Paris, King Louis XI and his Chief Justice Jehan Frollo visit a printing shop where Frollo is determined to protect Paris from perceived evils, such as the printing press and gypsies. However, during the annual Feast of Fools, the deaf hunchback Quasimodo is crowned King of Fools until Frollo captures him and takes him back to the church. A young gypsy girl named Esmeralda is caught by a guard and seeks sanctuary in Notre Dame,
