Frank is a master safecracker and professional jewel thief who has spent years living by a strict set of rules. After serving time in prison, he has built legitimate businesses as fronts for his criminal activities, but beneath the hardened exterior he dreams of leaving the underworld behind and building a normal life with Jessie.
When a lucrative diamond robbery brings Frank into contact with powerful Chicago crime boss Leo, he reluctantly agrees to undertake one final major score. The job promises enough money for Frank to walk away from crime forever. But when Leo refuses to honour their agreement, Frank discovers that leaving the criminal world may prove far more dangerous than entering it.
With his family threatened and everything he has worked for suddenly at risk, Frank decides that nobody will control his future — whatever the cost.
Written and directed by Michael Mann in his feature-film directorial debut, Thief is a stylish, atmospheric neo-noir crime thriller featuring striking nighttime cinematography and an electronic score by Tangerine Dream.
