Tillie Schlaine (Carol Burnett) is introduced to the charming but unpredictable Pete Seltzer (Walter Matthau) at a party arranged by their friends. Pete is a confirmed bachelor with an eccentric sense of humour, but his irregular appearances in Tillie’s life gradually develop into an unconventional romance.
Marriage and the arrival of their son Robbie bring happiness, but Pete’s wandering eye puts increasing strain on their relationship. Years later, the couple face a devastating family tragedy that tests their marriage and forces both Pete and Tillie to confront their feelings for one another.
Blending sharp comedy with deeply moving drama, Pete ’N’ Tillie showcases Walter Matthau and Carol Burnett in memorable performances, with Geraldine Page earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.
