In 17th-century France, charismatic priest Urbain Grandier (Oliver Reed) becomes an obstacle to Cardinal Richelieu’s plans to strengthen central control by destroying the fortifications of provincial towns. When the emotionally troubled Sister Jeanne (Vanessa Redgrave) develops an obsession with Grandier, accusations of witchcraft and demonic possession provide his political enemies with the opportunity they need.
As accusations spread through the convent, religious hysteria consumes Loudun. Grandier finds himself facing an increasingly ruthless campaign designed not merely to discredit him, but to destroy him.
