Every Christmas, wealthy American widow Rosie Forrest — known affectionately as “Auntie Roo” — invites a group of children from a local orphanage to her magnificent English mansion for a lavish holiday celebration. To the children she appears generous and kind, but behind the locked doors of the old house lies a disturbing secret.
Still consumed by grief over the death of her young daughter Katharine, Auntie Roo keeps the child’s mummified remains hidden away in an upstairs nursery and holds séances in a desperate attempt to contact her spirit.
When orphaned brother and sister Christopher and Katy Coombs sneak into Auntie Roo’s Christmas party, Roo is immediately captivated by Katy’s remarkable resemblance to her dead daughter. Her fascination quickly becomes an obsession, and when the festivities are over, she refuses to let Katy leave.
Christopher becomes convinced that Auntie Roo is the wicked witch from Hansel and Gretel and has imprisoned his sister inside the mansion. With nobody willing to believe his extraordinary story, Christopher must return to the house and rescue Katy himself.
What follows is a wonderfully macabre battle of wits inside Auntie Roo’s sinister mansion, where childhood fairy tale and terrifying reality begin to merge.
Inspired by Hansel and Gretel, Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? is a deliciously dark British horror thriller combining Gothic atmosphere, black humour and suspense, headed by an unforgettable performance from Shelley Winters.
